Julie's Quest

Hello, and welcome to my blog. My blog is about the trials and tribulations of writing, where we celebrate successes and commiserate our near misses. We tell it like it is here and will do our very best to help you on the road to being published and pick you up after the rejections (they will come!) Whether you are a professional or amateur writer you will find something useful here.

I hope you enjoy reading my posts and will visit again soon.

O is for ........................Opinion

Is writing subjective? Well, yes it is to a certain extent. One person's idea of what constitutes good writing isn't necessarily someone else's. A short story you sumbit to one editor might be returned to you, rejected for many reasons: wrong length, wrong characters, wrong theme for the particular magazine issues they are thinking about. But it might be just right for another editor. This has happened to me twice: a story has been rejected by one magazine only to be accepted a couple of months later by another magazine's editor. And in the second case the story was rejected by an editor but when that editor left, I sent it in again to the new editor and it was accepted!

It's all a matter of opinion! So don't be disheartened if an editor rejects your short story. Revamp it and send it out to other magazines until you've exhausted all your options (which the rate short story markets are disappearing won't take you very long ;0). Don't judge the standard of your writing on one person's opinion as although your story might be unsuitable for that one editor, it might be perfect for another editor. Don't give up!

Happy writing
