Julie's Quest

Hello, and welcome to my blog. My blog is about the trials and tribulations of writing, where we celebrate successes and commiserate our near misses. We tell it like it is here and will do our very best to help you on the road to being published and pick you up after the rejections (they will come!) Whether you are a professional or amateur writer you will find something useful here.

I hope you enjoy reading my posts and will visit again soon.

When Life Gives You Lemons ......

You know that old cliche - life is not bed of roses (or words to that effect) -  or life is not a bowl of cherries? Life has a habit of smacking you in the face every now and then and it can play havoc with your writing life too. But we know life isn't fair and that bad things can, and do, happen to lovely people and some of life's not so nice people seem to walk on air (yes I am going for the world record in how many cliches I can stuff into one post!)

There's not a lot you can do about the unpredictability of life other than take a big breath, saddle up, and ride with it. So if the gods have conspired against you and you're just not in the mood to write, or your writing time has withered away to nothing causing you frustration and wondering what in the world you ever did to deserve whatever disaster has befallen you - remember that time doesn't stand still and what seems traumatic now will be less so tomorrow. All things must pass and if you can't do anything else, at least you can write about it! There's a story in everything - even in lemons. And, remember - those people who irk you or do wrong by you make excellent fodder for your short stories  .......  keep that in mind next time that cold caller phones you for the fifth time in an hour even though you said no on the first call;or your boss dumps a load of files to be sorted ten minutes before your shift ends; or that lady is rude to you in the queue at the supermarket; that impatient driver at the roundabout blares his horn at you; someone blames you or something you haven't done  -  you get the picture. When you are in the thick of it just count to ten and make a mental note to use it in your writing  somewhere  -  it helps!

Happy writing

All very true, Julie.

Hope life isn't too lemony for you at the moment!

Wise words Julie. And, if I may add (keeping to the cliches), 'When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!' :-)

Hi, Diane,

I think most of us have enough lemons in our lives to make enough lemonade to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool and then some. But then life would be awfully boring without lemons!
