Julie's Quest

Hello, and welcome to my blog. My blog is about the trials and tribulations of writing, where we celebrate successes and commiserate our near misses. We tell it like it is here and will do our very best to help you on the road to being published and pick you up after the rejections (they will come!) Whether you are a professional or amateur writer you will find something useful here.

I hope you enjoy reading my posts and will visit again soon.

A nice cuppa and TV

All writing and no play makes Jack and Jill a dull writer which is why a bit of down time is essential. But when you have your down time, you don't have to forget about your writing all together - oh no! Have you ever watched a good who done it and found yourself trying to figure out who the murderer is? That's your writer's brain engaging! So why not read and analyse a short story or the plot of a novel you've just read? What did you think made it work or not work and what was it about the book that you loved or disliked?

You can also do this with TV programmes or the theatre or films. Don't just sit there passively, note down what you notice about them and see if you can't use some of that energy in your own writing. What was it about the language, pace, setting, characters, dialogue and plot that made you the reader or viewer engage? If you can work that out, learn from it and use it to improve your own writing, you'll be going in the right direction towards publication.

You don't have to restrict yourself to reading. You can compare the book to the film or TV series - what's changed? Why do you think the screen writers changed it and why did they decide to keep certain scenes in? Answering these questions could be quite insightful.

So next time you fancy a break from the physical act of writing, let your mind go to work on film!

Happy writing
